I had the same problem with my 2001 740i (E38), after the cable broke when I pulled on it going to Home Depot. It would still open from the outside but it was a hassle. I ordered a used one from Ebay from an older model E38 and it was shorter, but I still installed it. I figured that it would just open quicker, with less of a pull. After putting the panel and the inside handle back, it opened fine, but ones I parked and try opening it, it would not open from either side, so I had to get out through the passenger's side. I read that many people removed the seat and did other laborious things to other models, but it is not possible to remove the panel on a E38 if the door isn't open. So when I thought of the door opening when the inside door handle cable broke, I decided to cut the inside cable (remember, this was shorter than the original one) at the handle, voala!
The door opened from the outside. I guess the reason it won't open, it's because the inside level is stuck in the open position, so it will not allow the outside handle to open it. It's like trying to open it from both sides at the same time. I am not saying this is the same scenario than everyone's, but it is what worked for me without having to remove other unnecessary parts or spend a few hundred dollars having a shop replace it.
My local dealer charged me about $50 for a new one and problem solved. Hope it helps you guys.
The problem is the door latch mechanism is bad and needs replacement. The method I use to get the door panel off is to get the screws loose, one is behind the plastic plug that has 'SRS' on it, one is behind the wood trim. The panel is held on with plastic clips that have to be forced off. Even after the panel comes off, there is still the stuck door, and it will require the removal of the vapor barrier, try to save it if you can, if not replace it with new and use new mastic or the rain water can wet the carpets. I have done this job and the possibility exists the door panel will be damaged during this activity, be aware.
If a plastic rod clip is broken and not disconnected, I might add that many parts houses sell packages of clips cheap in the self help racks. Maybe something there will match up and I’m assumng a BMW dealer is not close. Another option for a broken clip is to use a spring steel carburetor linkage clip; also available in the self help stuff.
While I don’t know if you’re guilty of this or not, many times those clips are broken or dislodged because the door handle is yanked firmly while opening a door instead of using a slower, less forceful movement. The guys have it pretty well solved out and since youre about to open up the door panel you already know the things that can go wrong inside the door. HOWEVERin a BMW SpecificallyIf it was ME I would do the following. Yes, I’ve owned and repaired MANY BMW’s Take your key Jeez if it still does have a key and use it in the offending door to lock/unlock the door from the outside. ALSOusing the keyIF it has one in the rear trunk/door to activate the usual BMW Lock/Unlock ALL doors featureLOLIF BMW still has that on the X5. I just wanted you to do this to weed out a lock rod issue in the door as BMW has slightly different locks than most cars with how they lock and unlock and even deadbolt themselves. If all these tests are possibledo themotherwiseyou knew you were going to go into the door panel anyway looking for damage or a broken clip holding a lock rod of some sort.
Hello, This is my first post and unfortunately it's because I need some help with my wife's car. It's an '06 3.0D X5. The car lives outside. This morning I went to open the drivers door andwhen I pulled the handle it felt very stiff, but I assumed it was the cold making the door seal stick to the car.
Mcafee Security Center Won't Open
So I gave it a good pull and then the handle went slack. I am guessing there is a cable or some sort of linkage inside from the handles to the lock. So now I have a drivers door which is closed, and the external and internal handles do nothing.
I can get in via the passenger door, but obviously that isnt ideal. Has anyone had the same experience, or can anyone give me some advice on what needs fixing. I don't mind having a crack myself if it isnt too hard, or I could get the AA out and guide him to do what is needed.
Thanks for any help you can give me on this. There is a metal bracket on the inside of the door that the handle attaches to, on it is a cable that goes down to the actual door lock latch.
The cable could have come off and would just need clipping back in but it's more common (in my experience at least!) for the carrier itself to brake. Normally the handle doesn't fully return and sits a bit proud of the door if this is the case. Also, does it open from the inside? If it does you might find it easier to open the windows by holding the unlock button on the remote and opening the drivers door that way. Climbling though the car every time you get in doesn't sound like fun!!
Drivers Door Won't Open From Inside
Good luck, let us know how you get on! Hello, This is my first post and unfortunately it's because I need some help with my wife's car. It's an '06 3.0D X5.

You'll need to take the door card off then to get at the door latch. I'll give you fair warning, this won't be fun! Getting the doorcard off in itself isn't difficult but the problem will be doing it with the door closed as the seat will be in your way. American horror story season 6 full episode. I normally take the rear bench seat out, then unbolt/unplug the drivers seat and lift it into the back.
This will give you the room you'll need to get the door card and weather membrane off. Once you've done that have a wiggle of the levers on the door latch inside the door. You'll probably find one of them has gone tight and and is stopping the latch opening correctly. It's unlikely to be a problem with cables if neither handle works.
It would be a good idea to disconnect the battery before you start because you'll have to take the side airbag off to do this and unless you're very careful you'll end up with the warning light on.
